The unhealthy, the distracting, and the addressing."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to my first blog entry; let&#8217;s get into it!<\/p>\n<p>I cultivated the following lists because I experienced there was a lack of what I&#8217;ve coined, &#8220;Addressing Coping Skills&#8221;.\u00a0 Many seek counsel because of unhealthy coping skills and most of them practice what I call, &#8220;Distracting Coping Skills&#8221;, which I state is just as important.\u00a0 Dysfunction occurs when there is an imbalance with the following:<\/p>\n<p>UNHEALTHY COPING SKILLS<br \/>\noverworking<br \/>\novereating<br \/>\noverexercising<br \/>\noversleeping<br \/>\nalcohol; drugs; smoking; etc<br \/>\nself-harming; cutting; restricting food<br \/>\nsuicidal ideation<br \/>\nisolation<br \/>\nadultery<br \/>\nrisk-taking; dangerous behaviors<br \/>\npromiscuity<br \/>\nhelping others at the expense of Self<br \/>\navoidance<br \/>\novercompensation<br \/>\ncontrol issues\/ rigidity<\/p>\n<p>DISTRACTING COPING SKILLS<br \/>\nreading<br \/>\ntelevision<br \/>\ncomputer<br \/>\nvideo games<br \/>\nsocializing<br \/>\nentertainment<br \/>\nexercising<br \/>\nwalking<br \/>\ngym<br \/>\nmeditation<br \/>\nrelaxation<br \/>\nart<br \/>\nsports<br \/>\nclubs; groups<br \/>\nvolunteering<br \/>\nmusic<br \/>\nhobbies<br \/>\ntravel<\/p>\n<p>ADDRESSING COPING SKILLS<br \/>\npsychotherapy<br \/>\npsycho-education<br \/>\njournaling<br \/>\nassertive communication (expression of needs)<br \/>\nopen communication (emphasis on curiosity)<br \/>\nart<br \/>\nmusic<br \/>\nprayer<br \/>\n<strong>ACCURATE SELF-TALK<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>SELF-CARE BASELINE:<\/strong><br \/>\nsleep<br \/>\ndiet (fast food\/ processed food)<br \/>\nphysical activity<br \/>\nrelaxation<br \/>\nentertainment<br \/>\nrelationship with nature<\/p>\n<p>I bold Accurate Self-Talk and Self-Care Baseline because I deem them the most powerful addressing-coping-skills in managing the psychology and the biology of a person. Inaccurate self-talk explodes into anxiety and self-neglect is very, very depressing.<\/p>\n<p>My job\/therapy is to provide support during the investment into one&#8217;s Self.\u00a0 Which means I explore with you the lack of motivation you may be experiencing, I keep you accountable to your expressed agenda, I provide validation, perspective and options for your efforts and obstacles.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not a &#8220;yes therapist,&#8221; tho.\u00a0 But just because I highlight your growth areas doesn&#8217;t mean there is judgment.\u00a0 And lastly, <em>consistency<\/em>, is key!\u00a0 Not to be confused with\u00a0<em>perfection<\/em>.\u00a0 Clients will try to report to me that they got &#8220;a wonderful 8 hours of sleep last night!&#8221;\u00a0 I nod approval, then ask, &#8220;And the previous nights&#8230;?&#8221; They become bashful and together we remember that <em>consistency is key<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, with me or another therapist, covering this foundational piece of Coping Skills will curb the amount of time, energy and money it takes to invest into yourself.\u00a0 Because what if you&#8217;re not aggressive or anxious, you&#8217;re just &#8220;hangry&#8221; ?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to my first blog entry; let&#8217;s get into it!
