{"id":212,"date":"2020-06-01T22:29:30","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T22:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/34.105.124.156\/?p=212"},"modified":"2020-06-03T19:26:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T19:26:38","slug":"to-be-a-good-parent-spouse-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/practicaltherapyofedmonds.com\/?p=212","title":{"rendered":"to be a good parent\/spouse\/person"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I want to address a very common desire my clients express to me one way or another: &#8220;I just want to be a good person.\u00a0 HOW do I be a good person?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As there are very many philosophers of today and from history I, too,\u00a0 have my opinions&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>There are three elements I impress upon my clients that foster this desire to be a good person:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accountability; Validation; Effort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I must emphasize that these are not buzz words to me.\u00a0 Many other adjectives could fit under these &#8220;umbrellas,&#8221; but these are the concepts I cultivate and they are applicable to every relationship with Self and Others.<\/p>\n<p>To support this opinion of mine, one could research Attachment Theory where Bowlby and Ainsworth examine Warmth and Structure in childrearing, https:\/\/www.simplypsychology.org\/attachment.html.\u00a0 I broke down Warmth and Structure to better understand what each would actually<em> look like.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Structure is best witnessed through <strong>Accountability<\/strong>.\u00a0 Accountability looks like <em>follow-through\/follow-up, consistency, <\/em>and includes<em> consequences<\/em> (good and bad).<\/p>\n<p>Warmth is best witnessed through <strong>Validation.\u00a0 <\/strong>Validation\u00a0looks like c<em>ompliments, pride, praise, recognition, apologies, thank you&#8217;s, and being Present in the other&#8217;s Pain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Effort<\/strong> looks like the time, money, and energy <em>invested into a task meant to cultivate a relationship<\/em>.\u00a0 There must be an acceptance of the inherent learning curve experienced in forming new habits\/breaking old habits.\u00a0 This is where Forgiveness can be practiced. (I&#8217;ll speak on Forgiveness very soon).<\/p>\n<p>Accountability cultivates Trust Development with both Self and Others.<\/p>\n<p>Validation cultivates Love for Self and Others.<\/p>\n<p>Effort is the catalyst to efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>I expand and elaborate their applications during each session.<\/p>\n<p>It is as sad a phenomenon as it is common, that clients do not always recognize that though there is ample and very sincere Love in a relationship, Trust is lacking.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not always as apparent as infidelity or lying.<\/p>\n<p>Love is unconditional.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s so beautiful, some say magical.\u00a0 To be accepted with no strings attached is so inviting and encouraging.\u00a0 It feels safe just to be your awkward, imperfect Self.<\/p>\n<p>Trust has many demanding conditions.\u00a0 Yeah, there&#8217;s some pressure here; that&#8217;s appropriate.\u00a0 One can better trust when the other is predictable.\u00a0 Predictability is shaped by consistency.\u00a0 One can trust better when the other can take ownership of faults or mistakes, ensuring a chance to move forward with awareness and hope.\u00a0 Being predictable and accountable provides a situation of safety.\u00a0 One can trust better when one feels safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How do I prove that I&#8217;m sorry?
