{"id":253,"date":"2020-08-01T21:08:23","date_gmt":"2020-08-01T21:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/practicaltherapyofedmonds.com\/?p=253"},"modified":"2020-08-01T21:08:23","modified_gmt":"2020-08-01T21:08:23","slug":"boundaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/practicaltherapyofedmonds.com\/?p=253","title":{"rendered":"Boundaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, there are books and books (and now social media and the internet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> etc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) about Boundaries.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how I break down this concept for application!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>BOUNDARIES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boundaries keep Self and Others <\/span><b>Safe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotions give us information about our Boundary Status: crossed, respected, ignored, etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boundaries can be physical and mental.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of physical boundaries:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequency<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distance<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of mental boundaries are in the form of Communication:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><b>yes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s are received with follow-up<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><b>no<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s are received with respect and trust<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><b>maybe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s are received with understanding and curiosity<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><b>I don\u2019t know<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s are received with patience and creativity<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Yes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s are easy enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>no<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s really challenge trust issues so that can get more complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maybe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s and<\/span><b> I don\u2019t know<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s need to be addressed just as much as the others, not left to frustration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019d appreciate elaboration or assistance with identifying, expressing AND enforcing Boundaries<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit up my calendar and we\u2019ll continue from there-<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I capitalized AND because people tend to forget that having boundaries isn\u2019t enough; one must express and enforce them.\u00a0 And when one is new to this concept one tends to feel guilty during expression and enforcement.\u00a0 This is when I begin to work on the distinction between True and False Guilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh my gawd, April &#8211; what is False Guilt??\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m posting another blog about that one under, \u201cEmotional Management 101.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are we trying to use Boundaries to become<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and stay <\/span><b>Safe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0 What\u2019s the big deal about Safety?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without it one cannot be curious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without it one becomes emotionally stunted, relying on survival instincts and denial mechanisms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without it one cannot take healthy risks (yes, risk is as dangerous as it is necessary)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human condition is curious and emotional and revels in risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask yourself now if you feel <\/span><b>safe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0 Do you let others feel <\/span><b>safe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?
